Brian Smith and Tony Mullinger started Southend Canoe Club in the early summer of 1971; both being BCU coaches. The car was loaded to go on our first whitewater run, first to Pendine in Wales to surf, then on to Llangranog for the whitewater run and after that the river Wye. The SCC also built up a good reputation as canoe lifeguards.

Tony Mullinger lived a very active life in New Zealand. Brian Smith lives in France.
